September 2, 2013 - PHRD is encouraged by support from Alberta Education regarding Pembina North Community School

While summer was a time for rest and relaxation for many in the public school world, the PHRD Board and Administration, maintained a positive momentum for the Pembina North Community School. In early July several Regional Services Administrators and Trustees met with Assistant Deputy Minister Lindquist and representatives from Infrastructure and Alberta Education regarding the development of a “Business Case” for the proposed consolidation of Westlock North schools. After an encouraging, supportive and informative meeting, PHRD administration refined the business case proposal for further discussion on August 27. Meanwhile, PHRD Administration visited two recently constructed schools in the Edmonton area to learn about the physical design features that are currently available as well as the decision making processes that the communities used throughout their construction. Then, as was posted last week, the Minister communicated his support for the process thus far in a letter to the Board (as included with Board package). More activity took place at Dapp School on August 27, 2013, when a group from Infrastructure and Alberta Education met with PHRD Facilities and Maintenance leadership and the Superintendent to examine the current site and building in the context of developing and refining the scope of the building project.

In early September, the Transition Team will resume meetings to guide and plan the Educational Programing for the Pembina North Community School. There are plenty of items on the “To-Do” list, all of which are quickly becoming more and more tangible as each encouraging step regarding the physical restructuring is achieved. The two processes; one to guide the education planning (through the Transition Team), and the other to plan the modernization process, will continue to occur in parallel throughout 2013-2014, aligned to the same purpose, “United We Achieve Excellence”!

August 21, 2013 - PHRD Board Receives Encouraging News from Minister's Office

The Board of Trustees received as information a letter from the Minister of Education. In the letter the Minister commends the board and communities for the commitment they have shown to meeting the needs of students in Westlock North and expresses his support for the project. "In light of declining enrolments in the Westlock North communities, Education supports the proposed consolidation, and my staff in Captial Planning will continue to provide assitance with this project's planning and development."
