PHPS teacher nominated for Edwin Parr award up at 5:30 a.m. to supervise kids in gym

Pembina Hills Public Schools is proud to nominate Jeff Tomiak, a teacher at Swan Hills School, for the 2017 Alberta School Boards Association’s Edwin Parr Teaching Award. The ASBA presents this award to six outstanding first-year teachers each year.

Jeff teaches Chemistry, Science and Math. He is very encouraging in the classroom and does a good job motivating his students. Jeff spent time with a student who was struggling in Chemistry, encouraging him and pointing out what the student was doing well. The student refocused his efforts and passed the class.

Jeff develops personal relationships with his students, making time to greet and talk with them through the day. He contributes to the school’s extra-curricular and community activities. He played an integral part in planning our local Science Fair and he coached the junior boys’ volleyball team.

Of special note, Jeff is up at 5:30 in the morning to supervise students at our local fitness gym in collaboration with the school’s Mental Health Capacity Building Project. Jeff is passionate about this program because he believes that physical wellness leads to many benefits in a student’s life inside and outside the classroom.

We congratulate Jeff on being nominated for this prestigious award!
